2016: A Knockout Year for Underwear?
We’re only a couple of months in to 2016, but it’s already proving to be quite an exciting year in the world of underwear. Obviously, this is of particular interest to an undie-obsessive like me, but there is much to hint at this being a more engaging year than most. A handful of the many things that have caught my eye in the news and on blogs already are:
- Olympic gold medal winning boxer Nicola Adams was announced as the face of Panache Sport (see image on right by Martin Brent)
- UK lingerie designer Karolina Laskowska gave fans another glimpse into her gorgeous vintage lingerie collection
- All is Fair launched in Kansas City, the first underwear boutique specifically for trans people
- The Intimate Ball raised £25,000 for breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel!
- The Coco de Mer spring/summer 2016 range was been photographed by Rankin
- Tommy John shared the results of a survey on how men feel about their underwear, plus an amusing video to advertise their new undies with ‘no adjustment needed’
- The Lingerie Addict posted a great review of Charlotte Olympia’s collaboration with Agent Provocateur
- Savannah Miller (fashion designer, and sister of Sienna) is designing a lingerie range for Debenhams
- Puns galore in the tabloids as Daisy Lowe is announced as the face of Triumph
But the best is yet to come. Not only does April see the opening of the V&A’s exhibition Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear – hopefully with an exciting accompanying events schedule! – but it’s also the month when Selfridges launch a complete overhaul for their lingerie and swimwear department, called The Body Studio. Looks like this year will be the one where the general public in the UK will finally get a chance to start viewing underwear as more than ‘unmentionables’.
